Jillian’s passion for sharks ignited at eight years old during a snorkeling encounter with a nurse shark in Florida. Growing up in rural Maine, she channelled that early fascination into education and science, determined to counter widespread misinformation and fear. After years of diving, tagging, and witnessing profound moments like a lemon shark giving birth, she founded Sharks for Kids in 2013 to provide free, accessible resources to young people worldwide. Through classroom visits, field trips, and virtual lessons in multiple languages, her work has transformed children’s attitudes in as little as 30 minutes and created pathways for local youth into marine careers. She now advocates fiercely against shark culling, promotes non-lethal coexistence strategies, and argues that respect rather than love is the key to conservation.
