Welcome to the Grit Diaries with Mon and Maz, where we share real life stories of individuals who have faced life’s hardest moments. This inspirational story highlights their journey to hope and healing, demonstrating incredible personal growth. We hope these emotional stories encourage self-improvement and inspire you to overcome challenges in your own life. πŸ’–

Ingrid grew up mixed-race in New Jersey, constantly asked to fit herself into racial categories by uncomfortable adults. She retreated into horses as a child, then into rebellious music as a teenager, playing bass, guitar, and drums across multiple bands while wrestling with her sexuality and coming out as a lesbian at 25. Her mother, a tech pioneer, initially rejected her, threatening disownment. When the mother was diagnosed with cancer and later metastasis to her lungs during COVID, the family lived separated for years. But when Ingrid’s mother reached out to spend Christmas together, a profound reconciliation unfolded. In her mother’s final months, they bridged decades of hurt through openness and forgiveness. Ingrid’s book documents this journey and the lessons learned: that going through fire refines us into gold, and that keeping an open heart matters more than winning an argument.

Ingrid Hu Dahl is a TEDx speaker, executive coach, grief coach, and author based in the US. Born in 1980 to a pioneering Asian tech mother and Scandinavian father, she spent her early years navigating racial othering before finding sanctuary in horses and later in punk rock and feminist music communities. She recently published ‘The Sun Shining on Morning Snow’, a memoir exploring her complex reconciliation with her mother before the latter’s death from cancer.

πŸŽ™οΈ IN THIS CONVERSATION:
β€’ Keeping your heart open to reconciliation, even after years of rejection, can transform entire family lineages and shift generational narratives from division to unity.
β€’ Nonverbal communication and the ability to read subtle emotional cues, developed through early experiences like working with horses, become foundational skills for deeper connection in coaching and relationships.
β€’ Coming out or claiming your authentic identity often requires moving through internalised shame and the fear of additional othering, but the alternative of living inauthentically causes greater harm.
β€’ Transformation through hardship is not about moving past pain but about integration, weaving grief and life changes into a cohesive whole rather than fragmenting identity across external roles or titles.
β€’ Being a beginner and allowing yourself to be imperfect in new endeavours, whether writing, narrating, or creating, opens doorways to lightheartedness and joy that perfectionism blocks.
β€’ Leadership at all levels, whether professional or familial, requires reflection, genuine listening, and asking open-ended questions that start with ‘what’ rather than leading with assumptions and narratives.
