A stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis in December 2022 shattered Dominic Lynch’s world. On Kintsugi Heroes, he speaks about the misdiagnosis that left him facing Christmas with no options, the PET scan that restored possibility, and how he transformed a terminal sentence into a mission to help other men get the health checks that might save their lives.
Dominic Lynch was 51, fit, successful, and living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches when chest tightness during exercise led to a devastating diagnosis: stage 4 lung cancer. The path there was itself traumatic. An initial misdiagnosis suggested a rare, untreatable kidney cancer, leaving Dominic and his family facing Christmas believing there were no options left. A follow-up PET scan identified the true primary on the lung, restoring the possibility of treatment and igniting what Dominic describes as one of the most powerful moments of his life. Instead of shutting down, he approached his illness as a structured challenge. Drawing on his engineering background, he focused on controlling what he could: building a trusted medical and emotional support network, learning everything he could about his treatment options, managing anxiety with a psychologist, and allowing himself to grieve as well as persevere. Fourteen months into ongoing treatment, Dominic has deliberately rejected the identity of ‘cancer patient’. Instead, he is using his living experience to open conversations with men in his peer group about the reluctance to seek help, the critical importance of proactive health checks, and the strength found in vulnerability and community. He speaks to groups, appears on podcasts, and credits purposeful giving and the love surrounding him as integral to his healing. His story is one of radical honesty, redefined values, and the profound wealth found in connection over achievement.
In this Kintsugi Heroes conversation with John Milham, Dominic shares the story behind the moments below.
ποΈ IN THIS CONVERSATION:
β’ Dominic repeatedly addresses the reluctance of men aged 45β65 to seek medical help, credits his own early action with giving him options, and frames his advocacy work explicitly around encouraging men to get health checks.
β’ A central thread of the episode is Dominic’s journey from being ‘the oak tree’ everyone relied on β unable to show weakness β to actively modelling emotional openness and encouraging other men to do the same.
β’ The entire narrative arc is built around how Dominic responded to life-threatening adversity β finding structure, building a team, maintaining gratitude, and converting crisis into purpose.

ABOUT KINTSUGI HEROES

Welcome.
We’re glad you found your way here.
Kintsugi Heroes was created from a simple belief: every person has a story worth sharing, and sometimes the story we need to hear arrives exactly when we need it most.
Our name comes from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. Rather than hiding the cracks, they are honoured as part of the object’s history. We believe people are much the same. The experiences that challenge us, break us, shape us, and help us grow are often the very things that connect us to one another.
This channel is home to honest conversations about resilience, hope, grief, recovery, courage, love, and what it means to keep moving forward when life doesn’t go to plan.
Here you’ll find six podcast series, each sharing stories through a different lens:
β’ Kintsugi Heroes, hosted by John Milham
β’ Animals & Us, hosted by Natalie Stockdale
β’ Grit Diaries: From Grit to Grace, hosted by Simone Allan and Maryan Bova
β’ From There to Here, hosted by Emma Bellamy-Dodd
β’ Golden Threads: Stories of Disability & Resilience
β’ Pride in Stories, hosted by John Dwyer (launching 31 July 2026)
Every story shared here is offered with the hope that it helps someone feel a little less alone. A little more understood. A little more connected.
Whether you’re navigating a difficult season, supporting someone you love, or simply looking for meaningful conversations, you’re welcome here.
New episodes are released weekly across our series.

Thank you for being part of this community.
We help people tell the stories they need to share so others can discover the story they need to hear.
