Rescued from human trafficking as a street shoeshine boy in Vietnam, Vi Do is now CEO of Blue Dragon, an organisation that has saved over 2,000 trafficking victims. This is the story of how one person’s belief in him became his belief in thousands of others, and the price and purpose of that work.
At 14, Vi Do had no shoes, no family safety net, and no one who believed he was worth anything. He shined shoes on Hanoi’s streets, hid money in his pockets to survive, and watched kids his age trapped by dealers and exploitation. Then an Australian English teacher named Michael told him he was smart and good. That sentence changed everything. Vi worked his way into a five-star hotel, built financial security, and could have stopped there. But when he encountered the same street kids he used to be, he recognised his younger self in their eyes. Michael asked him a question that reframed his whole life: at 80, would he be prouder of money or lives changed? Vi answered by joining Blue Dragon Children Foundation, where he now leads rescues of human trafficking victims across Southeast Asia. Seventeen years later, Blue Dragon has rescued more than 2,000 people and helps approximately 50,000 annually. But Vi refuses easy optimism. He speaks openly about the trauma survivors carry, the fact that some recover and some never fully do, and the unglamorous survival skills street children develop just to stay alive. This episode is for anyone who was told they were worthless as a child, anyone who is losing hope in at-risk youth, and anyone trying to understand what real, sustained rescue work actually costs and demands. It proves that one person seeing your potential and naming it can redirect a life from survival to purpose. We believe people are much the same. The experiences that challenge us, break us, shape us, and help us grow are often the very things that connect us to one another.
