Hunter Valley’s Stories of Resilience

A collaborative project between the Singleton Neighbourhood Centre and charity Kintsugi Heroes has captured the stories of the Hunter’s resilience following the 2022 floods.

The project delivered 12 ‘Kintsugi Heroes’ video and audio episodes with the conversations collected also included in a book that will be distributed around the Hunter.

The stories offer the perspectives of many residents, including individuals, families and businesses who were directly impacted by the floods. Also covered are the people and organisations who provided material support and mental health support, community organisations who played a supporting role and government representatives who assisted in the recovery.

“We shed light on the impact that natural disasters like floods can have on a community, impacts that are often avoided or not talked about after the event,” founder of Kintsugi Heroes, Ian Westmoreland, said.

“These stories can help people recognise their own hidden value in whatever they may have been, or are currently, going through.”

Singleton Neighbourhood Centre President Sue George is excited to share the resilience demonstrated by the community during and after the floods.

“We feel encouraged that it will help people who are still experiencing trauma from the flood event,” Sue said.

“Having these stories published as a podcast and as a book will provide an important and permanent resource to our community.”
